Feb 2, 2026Our Perspective on Lignis for Children with Dysgraphia
As parents with a child with extreme dysgraphia we saw a gap. Existing spell checkers aren't designed for the kinds of spelling attempts children with dysgraphia produce. Our own child was incredibly frustrated by these tools. They might write "bkos" for "because," and traditional tools simply can't make that connection. Lignis can.
But the frustration isn't just emotional; it's cognitive. Research shows that spelling and thinking compete for the same limited working memory. When a child has to wrestle with spelling while writing, the mental space needed for their ideas gets crowded out. Over time, many kids stop reaching for the words they actually want to use, substituting simpler words they know they can spell. Their writing ends up hiding the depth of what they really think.
What Makes Lignis Different?
Most assistive tools focus purely on accommodation: getting the right word on the page so the child can move on. That's important, and we support it. But we also believe children deserve the chance to learn from their writing.
Lignis uses AI to:
- Let kids write freely first. No red squiggles mid-sentence, no auto-correct quietly changing words. Separating writing from editing produces better, richer ideas. The spelling gets corrected afterward.
- Decode creative spelling. We understand what was meant, even when the spelling is unconventional
- Track patterns. We remember which words are challenging and adapt over time
- Make practice fun. Through story-based review exercises that reinforce tricky words
By default, we ask the learner to type out the correct spelling every time. Also by default, there is an option to turn on "speed mode" which lets you click through corrections quickly. This might be needed for quickly finishing some work. However, the account owner can disable this option for their kids, and ensure that more careful spelling practice is happening as well.
